Marktzicht, a Dutch town under occupation

Story: A Dutch town in the south. The German occupation seems not so bad. The local hotel "Marktzicht" (View on the market) has been occupied by the Wehrmacht for "R & R", rest and recuperation. Everything is back to normal, but what's going on in all these rooms?

Model: 35th scale, plaster houses and church, diorama material from al kinds of sources (From train scenery to 3d print), Italeri Blitz, Pyro Morris, resin and ejection moulded figures reworked.

Build: August 2023 starts with little renovations, Originally this huge diorama was build by Danny. It's an eyecatcher at one of the entrances to Historama World in Son, the Netherlands. All these little scenes in the rooms attrackt little eyes, and grown up's, that marvel at the fast amount of details. A huge number of hours to build, and a very limited things to choose from for decorating these scenes. A Normandy church in Holland? Aim is not to dramaticaly change it, but fix illogical things, little mistakes and tight scenes together. As the diorama is massive and in full view, I can only work on it in little steps. It has to stay viewable, and I'm only working on it on our build-saterdays.

Finally the composition of the market is forming itself. It's stil to crowded, maybe I have to loose the earth bunker? As I always forget to take pictures of the cellar details, now the large cab is off, lets take these pictures! To me it's almost good enough, but there are some details to come. The ANWB-pole to mention the most visable sore to me.

And with the market getting shape, I now need more visitors. So, converting soldiers to lose their belts and gear. Helmets become cabs, woodshoes and shoes instead of boots. Women is a problem. I've found some 3D parts for long dressed torso's, and printed them, and woodshoes. Arms is a challenge, but how to make a traditional farmers wife headgear? A Russian female soldier gets some extra cloth. And the baskets get fruits and stuff.

April 1 2025

April 1 is our Saturday build day in "Historama Wereld". All comes together in the cobblestones and the market stands get more and more inventory to sell. Enough for a day, adding a lot of worked up parts.

February 9 2025

Master builder and diorama wizard Bas Slaats, chalenged me to simply make a new square. A thin blue foam to stick over all other holes and reminents, and straighten it all. A chance to put sidewalkes on it. That is a thing that any Dutch town in those days had. More than 700 cobblestones later my shiny Citroën DS (1:43) is there to get a perspective. The earth bunker has a new place and a planking interiour.

November 23 2024

What is a market square without a market? An empty square. So, the stands are a combination of some 3D parts I found and adapted. Period pictures al show baskets and simple farmer derss for the salesmen and buyers. Just to get a perspective I've put them all in. And again there is a sheep that's all over the place.

September 21 2024

Placing the streetwork fits, with a couple of little adaptions, but there is a colour difference. My pre-made street is to blue against the original. The 20's little truck is a distraction to cover it a little. Now that the street is fixed, the ANWB-pole is placed on the crossroad, and the next plan in peeking around the corner. But what is that sheep upto?

September 2024

First step in restoring the street is a blue foam patch to fill the gap that will emerge when the earth bunker is removed. The plans on how to fill the market square get more outlined. I need some transport vehicles that farmers ans small traders would have used in the 1940's. A small truck? The market square is small. A vintage Pyro Morris bull nose car is the donor for chassis and nose. These small car's like the T-Ford and A-Ford where used for simple farm work.

July - August 2024

The 2 ambulances are replaced with one standard Opel Blitz truck. It delivers goods tot the hotel and patched up soldiers that can stay there for r&r. The stretcher party is to thigh the delivery of men and goods to the hotel. The small ambulance turns out to be a surprise. Structural damageed, but it's an 80's scratch attempt to make a Phänomen Granit 25H out of a Horch Kfz15 of Italeri. It's restored and will find housing elsewhere. All figures that where in the attic and some new additions have been used now to make a reception and handling party.

March 23 2024

Biggest issue is the earth bunker. It blocks the crossroad. Carefull deconstruction reveals a big problem. There is nothing under it. If I want to make it a normal crossroad, I need new pavement that is the same stuf as the old one.

March 23 2024

On Thingyverse I found a gravestone for the church cellar. Building diorama's kind of sticks to you. I get all kinds of ideas to enhance the whole. I put a couple of boxes and old furniture on the hotel's attick. While doing that I thought to put a scene of people hiding in it there. Neh, not my diorama, just fix the lesser poins, don't add new things.

March 2024

On to the 2nd cellar, the kitchen! Again Thingyverse has a kind of a medieval kitchen that provides parts. The cooks I found in my stash, the potato peales where added later, and are converted drivers of the Italeri Opel Blitz.

March 2024

The wine cellar has new occupants. An infantry man and a panzer man share a tast of the hotel's treasures. The converting and painting is every time done at home, the placing in the diorama on the build days in Historama Wereld.

February / March 2024

Bunk beds for the hotel rooms. The original where made of cut sprue. Changing details that put the general magnificence of the diorama down. With some of the occupants of the cellar field lazaret, bunkbeds are easly made. On Thingiverse a bedroom provides the other parts. pillows, matras and bed ends.

February 3 2024

The first cellar is relieved of medical stuff, (including a body bag) and has wine barrels. One of the soldiers and a nurse take inventory(?) and put a nice table in it.

January 6 2024

Some touching up, cleaning and some small things removed and changed. The hotel has now only Dutch signs on it. Charles Dickens has the chrismas decorations covered. Replacing of the streetlights. And more like that. Inventory on the hotel cellar and guest rooms.

January 1 2024

Lets start with these 87th scale lights. I've found some old 35th scale Tamiya's. The don't have to be lit, so, an easy swap.

August 8 2023

Inventory. On the market square are a German newstand, 25th scale figures and 87th scale laterns. The swastika flags are navy. The earth bunker is nice, but it blocks a street. A wine salesman selling pumpkins? I'm not sure they were sold in Holland in the Fourtees. The hotel has German and Dutch writing on it. The 2 ambulances are a but much filling on the limited space and the Einheitsdiesel has never been seen with red crosses. The other looks very odly. In the basement of the Hotel a field hospital you would expect on the battle field. The beds in the chaimbers are made of huge logs. The mission is: As most Dutch as possible. The "ANWB" direction sign is very Dutch, but was only on intersections, and it is wrongly coloured en on the wrong pole. Where to begin?.

December 10 2022

Now the "Bridge to far" diorama is good enough for it's purpose, this 2nd larg diorama on the entrance to "Bevrijdende Vleugels" is the next sore in our eye. It has the same rough edges and explosion of details. The cut walls on the rear (near the mirror were red. That's the first step. How to get focus on a this large project?.
