Cast wheels

Now I've been puzzeled by these wheels for a long time. How do you attach these cast flat chunks of iron to each other?

The answer came from a period wheel. This one is from a Mack. Just playing the role of cargo in the 1880 "cargo relais station" in the Dutch "Open lucht museum" in Arnhem. (The museum is a must see for all people interrested in every day history in the Netherlands)
